Better YouTube Thumbnails With AI (Faster and Cheaper)
The exact prompt formula and composition rules for AI-generated thumbnails that lift CTR without looking cheap.

The three rules of YouTube thumbnails
- A face, preferably with a strong emotion.
- One high-contrast focal point, readable at 120 px wide.
- Almost no text — 3 words max, huge, only if essential.
AI is great at rules 1 and 2. Text on thumbnails should still be added afterwards in Figma or Photoshop — SDXL text is unreliable, Flux is better but still not consistent enough for a thumbnail brand.
Prompt formula that works
[subject], [strong emotion or action], [dramatic lighting], centered composition, high contrast, cinematic close-up, 16:9
Real example:
A creator wearing a bright red hoodie holding a burning laptop with an expression of shock, dramatic red rim light, centered composition, high contrast, cinematic close-up, 16:9
Generate 8 variations, pick one, add your 3 words of text in a font your channel owns.
Aspect ratio
Always 16:9 → 1344×768 in SDXL. YouTube crops the top and bottom on some devices, so keep the subject dead-center vertically.
The A/B test discipline
Great thumbnail work is 20 % design, 80 % iteration. Generate a batch of 4–6 with slightly different subjects and expressions, publish two rotating variants, and let YouTube's built-in test tool tell you what works.
Commercial rights
For monetized channels, check the license and usage rules for the model or platform you use before publishing thumbnails.
